Why Are Insurance Companies Leaving My Area?

Why are insurance companies leaving my area?

Because every insurance company limits how many homes it will insure in one area. When a company reaches its limit, it stops renewing some of the homes there.

That's why a letter can arrive even if you've done nothing wrong. It often isn't about you or your house. It's about how many homes that company already has nearby.

Why does it happen most in high fire areas?

High fire areas are where we see it most. When a company reaches its limit in a high fire area, it stops renewing some homes there, and the homeowners get a letter.

Your own record still matters. A homeowner with two claims in five years will have a very tough time finding a regular homeowners policy.

What happens if my company leaves?

You have options, and the first step is to call us before your policy ends. We start with your main company, and if that isn't the right fit, we look at other companies through the brokerage.

If no regular company will take your home right now, there is the California FAIR Plan. It's the insurer of last resort, and it covers fire and not much else. A wrap policy covers the rest. Our posts on what a wrap policy is and why the two cost more together explain how that works.

Will companies come back?

It changes from year to year. New companies have been coming into California, and a home that couldn't find a regular policy last year may have options this year.

We offer a review at every renewal. If a regular homeowners policy opens up for your home, you'll hear about it from us.
